If a 1963 American work (television show) has a copyright notice, but wasn't registered for copyright, is it public domain, or is it copyrighted?

I am really confused by that year! Actually, US copyright in general confuses me! Is anyone else confused by it? Am I stupid?

EDIT: Could someone please answer this question? It's not my fault that I'm an idiot!

Basically, anything up to and including 1963 had to be registered and renewed for the copyright to continue after 1991*. Anything including and after 1964 carrying a notice did not have to be registered or renewed for the copyright to endure the full 95 years.

* This also applies to works published later that carry a 1963 or earlier copyright notice.
